Case Study: Hospital Executive Council (HEC)
The challenge: For decades, hospitals have used traditional inpatient metrics drawn from clinical or discharge data to improve efficiency, with measures like length of stay. Today, the shift to performance-based payment systems requires new measures and metrics to identify potential opportunities for improving care delivery and patient outcomes while also reducing the risk of financial penalties from adverse outcomes.
The Hospital Executive Council (HEC) of New York took up the challenge, searching for innovative approaches and new data sources to identify and analyze complications and readmissions.

ICD-10 Won’t Significantly Impact MS-DRGs for Two Years
A new study published in the Journal of AHIMA examines the possible effects of ICD-10 on payments. ICD-10 MS-DRGs are basically “a replication” of those currently in use under ICD-9, writes a team of researchers from 3M Health Information Systems, and will have little impact on the Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Groups used for inpatient reimbursement in the immediate future.

3M testifies at congressional hearing on ICD-10
Richard Averill, MS, director of public policy for 3M Health Information Systems, testified before the House Energy & Commerce Committee in a Feb. 10 hearing about ICD-10 implementation readiness. "If we are to transition the health care system to one that focuses on value over volume, we need ICD-10. It is simply time to have our diagnosis and procedure coding system reflect modern medicine."

Survey Reveals ICD-10 Costs for Small Physician Practices Significantly Lower
ICD-10 costs for small physician practices are significantly much lower than expected, according to a new study released today by the Professional Association of Health Care Office Management (PAHCOM). The survey of 276 physician practices of fewer than six providers revealed that total ICD-10 transition costs for an entire practice averaged $8,167.

Congress Declines to Extend ICD-10 Transition Deadline...For Now
The National Law Review examines the controversy over the October 1, 2015 ICD-10 deadline. A major component to for delay advocates has been the cost to physicians. For example, an AMA study states costs will range from $22,000 to as much as $106,000. In contrast, a November 2014 article in the Journal of AHIMA disputes this estimate and calculates the transition cost at roughly $2,000 to $5,900 for small practices.
